Chapter 25

Selene

Inception

Selene lowered herself from Hermes. She tied the steed to the small nearby olive tree and took two plums from her satchel. Sitting against the trunk, she gazed at Arcadia in the distance. “Damn it.”

She leaned her head against the tree and asked toward the city, “What do I do?”

The city offered no answer.

With a deep breath, she closed her eyes. She inhaled, then exhaled slowly. “What do I do?” Taking another breath, her eyelids became heavy. Her head sank and her hands fell from her lap onto the grass.

The plums rolled.

“Mind if I join you?” a deep voice said, startling her.

She reached for her sheathed sword.

The man lifted both hands toward her, surrendering himself. “I mean no harm.”

She let go of the blade handle and picked up the plums.

“Mind if I sit with you for a little?” he asked.

“Sure,” she replied, gesturing at the grass.

The towering man brushed his flowing silver hair behind his ears. Without concern for his clean white robe, he sat. “Thank you.”

Selene chuckled. “Oh, this isn’t my land, you don’t have to thank me.”

“I know… It’s mine.” He scratched his thick gray beard and smiled at her with his perfect set of teeth. “But you still didn’t have to let me join you. I do appreciate it.” He pointed at one of the plums. “Any chance I can have one?”

She tossed him the larger of the two. Taking a moment to inspect the other, she bit into the fruit.

The man immediately bit into his. Juice ran down his chin. He smiled. “So sweet.”

“They really are.” She took another bite. “I hope you don’t mind that I’m traveling through your land.”

“Not at all,” he said. “I saw you riding up and hoped you would stop. I always enjoy meeting new people.”

Chewing, she asked, “Has anyone ever told you that you resemble the mighty god Zeus? What’s your name?”

“Can I ask you something?” he asked, ignoring her questions. He bit into the fruit, then spat the brown seed near his foot.

“All right, ” she replied with a smirk. “I guess I’ll answer your question first.”

“Where are you going?”

“Arcadia.”

“Why?”

“It’s my home,” She lied.

He looked at her with a raised brow. “I don’t mean to be rude, but you don’t strike me as someone from Arcadia.”

“I’m not.” She finished her plum and tossed the seed near his. “Not originally anyways.”

His soft, sky-blue eyes urged her to continue.

“I travel a lot.”

The two shared a glance before he accepted her answer.

He said, “King Argus is a kind man, isn’t he?”

She nodded. “A gift from the gods.”

He sat up excitedly. “Once, a very long time ago, I was…” He stopped and laughed to himself. “I didn’t even ask; is it all right if I tell you a little story? Are you in a rush?”

She peered toward the midday sun, judging the time. “I can spare some time.”

“Good.” He gestured at the bags slung on her horse. “You wouldn’t happen to have any more plums, would you?”

“No, sorry.”

“It’s fine.” He picked up the two seeds.
